JSW Group and Posco to establish mega steel plant in Keonjhar, confirms Odisha CM

Bhubaneswar, Nov 1: During a visit to his home district of Keonjhar, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced on Friday that a significant steel plant will be established in collaboration between the JSW Group and South Korean company Posco.
He revealed that discussions had taken place during the roadshows for Utkarsha Odisha 2025 held in Delhi and Mumbai, leading to a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the integrated steel plant.
Majhi confirmed that the facility will be located in Keonjhar and is in the works, stating, “It is in the pipeline and will certainly see the light of day.” On October 21, the two companies unveiled their plans to invest in an integrated steel plant in India, which includes initiatives for green energy production and the manufacturing of battery materials for electric vehicles.
Two potential sites have been identified for the project: approximately 2,500 acres near the Odisha Tea Plantation Ltd (OTPL) in Taramakant area of Banspal block, and 1,956 acres in Patna, previously allocated to steel giant ArcelorMittal. This marks Posco's second attempt to establish a steel plant in Odisha, following the abandonment of a 12-million tonne facility in Paradip due to public opposition and regulatory challenges. Industries Minister Sampad Chandra Swain recently noted a surge in industrial interest in Odisha following the change in administration.
