Odisha govt revises Class I admission rules, new age limit set

Bhubaneswar, March 18: The Odisha government has decided to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 from the academic session 2025-26 and has accordingly revised the minimum age requirement for admission to Class I.

As per the new guidelines issued by the School and Mass Education Department, the minimum age for admission to Class I has been set at six years or above. This decision aligns with the NEP’s focus on early childhood care and foundational learning.

To provide greater flexibility for students, the government has also extended the deadline for completing six years of age from March 31 to September 1. This means children who turn six by September 1 will now be eligible for admission in the same academic year.

Officials stated that the decision was taken after consultations with educationists and experts, ensuring a structured and age-appropriate learning environment for students. The move is expected to enhance the quality of early education and prepare students for a strong academic foundation under the new policy framework.
