Odisha to construct seven barrages on Mahanadi to boost water management

Bhubaneswar, March 18: The Odisha government has announced plans to construct at least seven new barrages on the tributaries of the Mahanadi River to enhance water availability and improve resource management across the state.

Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Minister Rabi Narayan Nayak, while addressing the Odisha Legislative Assembly, stated that discussions regarding the project have already been held with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. This initiative aims to strengthen irrigation facilities, improve drinking water supply, and ensure better flood management.

Apart from the construction of new barrages, Odisha is actively engaging in talks with neighboring Chhattisgarh to facilitate the smooth and regular flow of Mahanadi River water into Odisha. Nayak informed the Assembly that Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has personally discussed the issue with a Chhattisgarh Minister to find a resolution.

Additionally, officials from both states have held meetings to address concerns related to inter-state river water sharing. The construction of these barrages is expected to significantly boost agricultural productivity and ensure a sustainable water supply for drinking and industrial use in Odisha.
