Odisha Government dismisses HMPV outbreak rumors

Bhubaneswar, Jan 16: The Odisha government on Thursday refuted rumors about an outbreak of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) infection in Khurda, stating that no confirmed cases have been detected in the state.

Public Health Director Dr. Nilakantha Mishra assured the public that all samples sent for testing have returned negative. “There is no cause for alarm,” he said, emphasizing that the situation is under control.

Dr. Mishra explained that HMPV symptoms, such as fever and mild respiratory issues, closely resemble those of the common cold and flu. He urged people to remain calm as no cases have been reported from any part of the state.

The Health Department is actively monitoring the situation to ensure preparedness. Dr. Mishra also noted that there has been no significant increase in respiratory infections in the region.

HMPV is a respiratory virus that can pose risks, particularly to young children and the elderly. The public is advised to maintain hygiene, wear masks, and seek medical attention for respiratory symptoms as preventive measures.
