Low-pressure area set to form over Bay of Bengal by Nov 6, IMD forecasts

Bhubaneswar, Nov 1: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated the potential formation of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal (BoB) by November 6. According to their extended forecast, a trough of low pressure is expected to develop over the southern BoB during the first week, with a low-pressure area likely forming in the southwest BoB towards the end of that week.

There is also a low chance of this system intensifying into a depression in the southwest BoB, particularly off the Tamil Nadu coast, during the first half of the following week (November 7-11).

The IMD's statistical model suggests a 30-40% probability of cyclogenesis occurring in the southwestern BoB near the Tamil Nadu-Sri Lanka coasts during the first week, while the second week carries a lower probability of 20-30% in the same region and a 30-40% probability of cyclogenesis in the southeastern BoB and adjacent south Andaman Sea.

As a result of this system, Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema, and Kerala are expected to experience a new phase of isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall from November 7 to 11.

In its weekly weather outlook for Odisha, the IMD has forecast light to moderate rain or thunderstorms in areas such as Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Cuttack, Khurda, Puri, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, and Kandhamal on November 1, with Malkangiri and Koraput experiencing similar conditions on November 2. Following this, dry weather is expected for the next three days, with the possibility of light to moderate rain or thunderstorms returning to coastal Odisha, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar on November 6-7.
