Virat Kohli announces retirement from Test cricket, ends glorious 14-year journey

New Delhi, May 12: Putting an end to days of speculation, Virat Kohli officially announced his retirement from Test cricket on Sunday, marking the close of a legendary chapter in Indian cricket. Kohli, widely regarded as one of the finest red-ball cricketers of his generation, shared the news through an emotional post on his Instagram account.

“It’s been 14 years since I first wore the baggy blue in Test cricket. Honestly, I never imagined the journey this format would take me on. It’s tested me, shaped me, and taught me lessons I’ll carry for life,” Kohli wrote, reflecting on his career.

“As I step away from this format, it’s not easy — but it feels right. I’ve given it everything I had, and it’s given me back so much more than I could’ve hoped for,” he added.

His decision comes just ahead of India’s five-Test tour of England, starting June 20 at Headingley, Leeds, which will launch the 2025–27 World Test Championship cycle.

While The Indian Express had reported that Kohli communicated his retirement plans to the BCCI, requesting a graceful exit, Dainik Jagran claimed he was informed by top officials that he no longer fits into India’s Test plans due to dipping form.

Despite the differing narratives, Kohli departs the longest format with immense respect, a heart full of gratitude, and a Test legacy few can rival.
