Heritage enthusiasts explore Odisha’s architectural treasures in Jagatsinghpur

Bhubaneswar, March 3: A group of 30 heritage enthusiasts embarked on a journey to explore Odisha’s rich architectural and spiritual heritage as part of the second Jagatsinghpur Heritage Walks (JHW). The group visited the ancient Trilochaneswar Temple in Kundeswar and the Ajaikapada Bhairava Temple in Sathalapura, uncovering the historical and cultural significance of these sites.

Trilochaneswar Temple: A Testament to Odisha’s Architectural Grandeur

Dating back to the 8th century, the Trilochaneswar Temple was built by King Biswanbara of the Keshari dynasty in the Rekha Deula style, with the Jagamohana added later in the 10th-11th centuries. The temple complex includes smaller shrines, a Rosaghara (temple kitchen), and a museum with 8th-century idols. Despite its significance, visitors noted the absence of signboards guiding people to the site. The group, led by Chief Priest Subash Padhi, also visited the Maa Harachandi Temple, believed to be closely linked to the Chamunda form of the Goddess.

Rukuna Ghat & Sacred Alaka River

Next, the group visited Rukuna Ghat on the banks of the Alaka River, which holds importance in Puranic legends. However, concerns were raised about the deteriorating condition of the water body. At the Siddheswar Temple, they learned about ancient cooling techniques used for preserving the 'mahadeep' (sacred lamp). The theft of two valuable idols from the nearby Saptamatruka Temple in 2019 also remains unresolved.

Ajaikapada Bhairava Temple: A Rare Architectural Marvel

The final stop was the Ajaikapada Bhairava Temple in Sathalapura, built by the Somavamsi Keshari Kings in the 10th century. The temple, originally damaged by floods and invasions, was reconstructed in the 20th century. The sanctum houses a rare idol of Ekapada Bhairava with one foot and four hands, reflecting its tantric and astrological significance. This temple is one of only two of its kind in Odisha, the other being in Jajpur.
