First radial EBUS-guided cryobiopsy performed in Odisha at IMS and SUM Hospital-2

Bhubaneswar, Oct 6: In a remarkable milestone for Odisha’s healthcare sector, the Department of Pulmonary Medicine at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital-2, Phulnakhara, has successfully performed the state’s first radial endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS)-guided cryobiopsy for a peripheral lung lesion. This advanced procedure marks a significant leap in the diagnosis and management of complex lung diseases.
The patient, a 75-year-old woman, had been suffering from breathlessness, persistent cough, and occasional hemoptysis for nearly two months. A CT scan revealed a peripheral consolidation in her left lung, a condition where conventional biopsy methods often fall short. Using the innovative combination of radial EBUS and cryobiopsy, doctors were able to obtain superior-quality tissue samples, enabling precise diagnosis.
Histopathological analysis later confirmed that the lesion was of tubercular origin, allowing timely initiation of targeted treatment.
The pioneering procedure was led by Dr. Swadesh Kumar Mohanty, Associate Professor of Pulmonary Medicine, assisted by Dr. Rachita Mohanty and Dr. Surjya Shankar Meher, with crucial support from the Department of Anaesthesia.
Dr. Mohanty described the success as a “major step forward” for Odisha, noting that IMS and SUM Hospital now joins a select group of institutions in India offering this cutting-edge diagnostic technique.
