Nursing employees in Odisha defy ESMA, initiate two-day cease work protest

Bhubaneswar, Sept 25: In defiance of the Odisha Emergency Services (Maintenance) Act (ESMA) and potential repercussions, nursing staff at all state-run hospitals and healthcare facilities in Odisha began a two-day strike on Wednesday to advocate for their ten-point demand list.
Organized by the Odisha Nursing Employees’ Association (ONEA), this protest could escalate into an indefinite strike starting September 27 if the government does not address their requests. Notably, the striking nurses have chosen to maintain services in emergency departments, ICUs, and operating theaters during the protest.
Dr. Artabandhu Nayak, Director of Nursing, emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating that ESMA is enforceable for six months from August 6, which prohibits any employee from participating in strikes. He warned that strict measures would be taken against any nursing staff involved in the protest.
Meanwhile, Odisha Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling expressed optimism for a resolution through dialogue, mentioning that the association has been invited to discuss the issues at hand. He remains hopeful for a favorable outcome that would ensure the continuity of healthcare services.
