Odisha enforces two-month fishing ban to protect marine life

Bhubaneswar, April 15: The Odisha government has implemented a two-month ban on fishing along its coastline, effective today. This annual measure is aimed at protecting marine life during their critical breeding and mating season. The ban is designed to conserve fish stocks, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the fishing industry in the state.

The Odisha Fisheries Department has instructed fisheries officers in key coastal districts like Ganjam, Kujang, Balasore, and Puri to enforce the ban strictly. The government has emphasized adherence to the Orissa Marine Fishing Regulation Act, which mandates the regulation of fishing activities to protect marine ecosystems. Violations of this act could result in imprisonment and fines.

To ensure the success of the ban, a coordinated patrolling effort involving forest, fisheries, and marine police, along with coast guard personnel, will be carried out. However, traditional boats measuring 8.5 meters or less in length are exempt from the ban.

The ban affects approximately 5,000 fishermen operating around 700 trawlers in Paradip. While the measure may disrupt the livelihoods of many, the government has previously offered compensation to help ease the financial burden on affected families.
