Monsoon likely to advance over Odisha in next two days: IMD

Bhubaneswar, June 13: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday stated that conditions are becoming favourable for further advancement of the southwest monsoon into more parts of Odisha within the next 48 hours. After an early onset, monsoon progress had stalled for nearly two weeks.

Heavy rainfall is expected to return to Odisha from Saturday, with the IMD forecasting intense spells between June 16 and 18. Thunderstorm activity is also likely to persist until June 17. The maximum temperature is expected to fall by 2 to 4°C after the next two days.

In its Extended Range Outlook, the IMD noted that a cyclonic circulation may form over the northwest Bay of Bengal around June 16, potentially intensifying into a low-pressure area over the north Bay by June 22. A yellow warning has been issued for Odisha till June 18.

June 13: Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) are expected across many districts, including Balasore, Cuttack, Khurda, Sundargarh, Koraput, and Malkangiri, till 8:30 AM Saturday.

June 14: Heavy rain may occur in Koraput, Malkangiri, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Ganjam, and Nabarangpur. Thunderstorms with gusty winds are likely across several coastal and interior districts.

June 15: Isolated heavy rain is expected in Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, and Gajapati, along with thunderstorms in many other districts.

June 16: Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in Sundargarh and Keonjhar, with heavy rain also expected in Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, and several southern districts. Thunderstorms with gusty winds may occur in multiple areas across the state.
