Jatra performer ‘Sahoo Bhauja’ booked for obscene act in Malkangiri

Bhubaneswar, Dec 30: The police in Malkangiri district, Odisha, have filed a case against jatra artist Bhagyashree Sahoo, widely known as ‘Sahoo Bhauja,’ for allegedly performing an obscene dance during a recent program in the Kotameta area.

The case was registered under Section 296 of the BNS, which addresses inappropriate acts and songs presented in public. Additionally, authorities have taken action against the organizers of the jatra show for their involvement.

In a related development, a departmental inquiry has been initiated against Debabrata Mallik, the Inspector In-Charge (IIC) of Mathili Police Station, who was reportedly present at the event. Allegations suggest that he did not intervene to halt the inappropriate performance, raising concerns about negligence in his duty.

The Superintendent of Police (SP) of Malkangiri has instructed the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter, ensuring accountability and adherence to community standards. The incident has sparked discussions on the need for stricter regulations in cultural performances to maintain decorum.
