Odisha shaken by early morning earthquake, no damage reported

Bhubaneswar, Feb 25: A moderate earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale was recorded near Puri in Odisha at approximately 6:10 am on Tuesday, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The earthquake had its epicentre in the Bay of Bengal, positioned at latitude 19.52°N and longitude 88.55°E, and occurred at a depth of 91 km.

Tremors were felt across multiple regions in Odisha, including Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Balasore, Paradip, Chandipur, and nearby coastal districts. Residents of Rourkela, Sambalpur, and parts of western Odisha also reported experiencing slight tremors. The impact extended beyond Odisha, with mild shaking reported in West Bengal and Bangladesh.

Since the epicentre was located in the sea, the tremors were classified as mild, and no reports of structural damage or casualties have surfaced so far. However, the sudden quake startled morning walkers and residents, particularly in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Paradip.

According to NCS data, the earthquake’s epicentre was approximately 286 km east of Puri and 297 km east-southeast of Bhubaneswar. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and further updates are expected.
