Odisha prepares for HMPV as Centre works on treatment guidelines

Bhubaneswar, Jan 12: No specific guidelines have been issued by the Central Government for the treatment of individuals diagnosed with Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) infections, according to Bijay Kumar Mohapatra, Special Secretary of the Health Department. Speaking on Sunday, Mohapatra stated, "The Union Health Ministry and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) have formed a technical advisory group to develop treatment guidelines, which we will implement once finalized. However, Odisha is fully equipped to manage such infections."
Mohapatra emphasized that there is no dedicated treatment for HMPV infections. "Symptoms such as cold, cough, and fever can worsen into pneumonia, which is a viral condition. The treatment approach mirrors that for pneumonia and is available at all health facilities. These centers are stocked with essential medicines and oxygen supplies, a preparedness measure in place since the COVID-19 pandemic," he said.
To address concerns surrounding the infection, the Health Department has scheduled a crucial meeting on Wednesday. This meeting, expected to include Chief District Medical Officers (CDMOs), will assess district-level readiness to handle HMPV cases.
HMPV, first identified in the Netherlands in 2001, typically spreads through airborne particles or contact with contaminated surfaces, especially during winter and early spring. Experts have reassured the public that HMPV is not akin to COVID-19 and is unlikely to result in a pandemic.
Reports indicate that the surge in flu-like HMPV cases in northern China is now on the decline.
