Odisha introduces speed governors, alcohol testing for Mo Bus drivers

Bhubaneswar, Nov 6: In a bid to address reckless driving, the speed limit for "Mo Bus" vehicles will be set to 40 km per hour within city limits, with speed governors installed on each bus, announced Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mohapatra on Wednesday.

Minister Mohapatra stated that Mo Bus vehicles will adhere to a speed cap of 40 km per hour in urban areas, with strict penalties for any violations. For routes outside city limits, the speed limit will be slightly higher at 50 km per hour.

The Minister also highlighted that drivers will undergo mandatory alcohol testing before starting their shifts, along with random tests throughout the day. “I have instructed officials to enforce the 40 km per hour speed limit for Mo Bus vehicles in the city, and 50 km per hour for routes outside,” he said.

Additionally, speed governors will be installed on all buses and routinely inspected to ensure compliance. Driver licenses will also be verified regularly.

“We are initiating alcohol tests for drivers before each shift, with random tests conducted during operations to maintain safety. These measures are being implemented immediately,” Mohapatra added.
