Heatwave grips Odisha, IMD forecasts intensifying conditions

Bhubaneswar, May 29: The scorching heatwave persisting over Odisha for the past two days shows no signs of abating, as forecasted by the regional center of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Bhubaneswar. Predictions indicate a potential rise in daytime temperatures by 2°C to 4°C across various parts of the state over the next two days.
Additionally, humidity levels are expected to elevate, contributing to discomfort for residents. The weather office anticipates hot and humid conditions prevailing throughout most areas of the state until May 31st. With strong summer currents originating from the west, humidity levels have already peaked at 79 per cent in Paradip and Gopalpur.
The IMD forecasts heatwave conditions in select regions of Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Bolangir, and Nuapada districts on both Wednesday and Thursday. However, there is a possibility of sporadic rainfall in certain areas, with chances of lightning and thunderstorms on Wednesday across Odisha.
Meanwhile, the onset of the southwest monsoon is anticipated to reach the Indian mainland around May 31st to June 1st, predominantly affecting Kerala initially. The IMD projects an above-normal monsoon season for the country, with a predicted rainfall of 106 per cent.
