Potential cyclone in Bay of Bengal, likely to hit Bangladesh and Bengal coasts
Bhubaneswar, May 23: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted on Thursday that a cyclone is expected to develop over the Bay of Bengal and move towards the coasts of Bangladesh and West Bengal.
According to the IMD's regional center, a low-pressure area over the southwest and west-central Bay of Bengal has shifted northeastwards, evolving into a well-marked low-pressure area as of 8:30 AM IST on May 23, 2024. This system is projected to continue moving northeastwards and consolidate into a depression over the central Bay of Bengal by the morning of May 24. It is then likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm over the east-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of May 25.
The IMD further indicated that the cyclone would subsequently move northwards and approach the coasts of Bangladesh and West Bengal by the evening of May 26 as a severe cyclonic storm.
Umashankar Dash, a scientist at IMD Bhubaneswar, confirmed these developments on his social media account, reiterating that the system is expected to move northeastwards, form a depression by May 24, and strengthen into a cyclonic storm by May 25.
