Odisha govt launches ‘Shishu Vatika’ pre-school initiative, extends midday meal scheme

Bhubaneswar, April 2: The Odisha government has introduced ‘Shishu Vatika,’ a new pre-school education initiative under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The programme was launched on Wednesday, coinciding with ‘Pravesh Divas,’ a special event marking the beginning of student enrolments for the 2025-26 academic session.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi inaugurated the initiative at Badagada High School in Bhubaneswar, reviving the traditional ‘Khadi Chuan’ ceremony, which symbolizes a child’s first step into the world of education. The introduction of ‘Shishu Vatika’ aims to strengthen foundational learning by implementing key aspects of the NEP 2020, ensuring early childhood education for children from the age of five.

In a major policy shift, the government also extended the Midday Meal programme under the ‘Mukhyamantri Poshan Yojana’ to cover students of Classes IX and X. Previously, the scheme was limited to students from Classes I to VIII. Under this initiative, students in the extended categories will now receive nutritious meals, including an additional egg and ladoos made from millet and peanuts.

Addressing the gathering, CM Majhi stated, “With ‘Pravesh Divas,’ we are bringing back the age-old ‘Khadi Chuan’ tradition to make school enrolment a memorable experience for young learners. Additionally, by expanding the Midday Meal programme, we are ensuring that students in higher classes receive adequate nutrition, which is essential for their growth and development.”

The Chief Minister further highlighted that despite NEP 2020 being introduced at the national level, its implementation in Odisha had been delayed over the past five years. However, the new government has prioritized the policy’s rollout, focusing on providing quality foundational education to children across the state.

In a video message, Majhi reiterated the government’s commitment to improving the education system in Odisha. “Our vision is to create an empowered, modern, and self-reliant generation. Initiatives like ‘Shishu Vatika’ will play a crucial role in shaping the future of our students,” he added.

The introduction of these initiatives marks a significant step in Odisha’s efforts to enhance school education and improve student welfare.
