Odisha braces for heatwave and hot, humid conditions from May 8 to 13: IMD

Bhubaneswar, May 7: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for rising temperatures across Odisha, forecasting heatwave and hot, humid conditions from May 8 to 13. The IMD has also placed several districts under a yellow warning, advising people to take necessary precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.
On May 7, certain districts such as Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Keonjhar, and Kalahandi may experience thunderstorms or lightning accompanied by gusty winds (30–40 kmph), particularly during the afternoon and evening. Light to moderate rainfall is also expected in some of these areas, including Angul, Boudh, and Dhenkanal, offering temporary relief from the heat.
However, hot and humid weather conditions are likely to intensify again from May 9 in coastal and adjoining districts such as Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Khurdha, Cuttack, and Jajpur.
According to the IMD, daytime temperatures may rise by 2 to 4°C over the next five days. The department has also warned of above-normal heatwave days for Odisha in May, urging residents to stay hydrated and avoid exposure during peak hours.
