SUMUM doctors achieve success with innovative treatment for uterine fibroids
Bhubaneswar, May 21: Doctors at SUM Ultimate Medicare (SUMUM) have achieved a breakthrough by successfully performing the Uterine Artery Embolisation (UAE) procedure on a morbidly obese woman grappling with multiple uterine fibroids and heavy post-menopausal bleeding.
Given the patient's unsuitability for surgery due to her obesity, the medical team opted for a safe and minimally invasive approach, preserving both the uterus and ovaries while minimizing discomfort.
This milestone procedure, a first at SUMUM, was carried out on Monday utilizing PVA particles and Gel-foam embolisation techniques, marking a significant advancement in treating uterine fibroids for patients ineligible for surgery or seeking non-surgical alternatives.
UAE involves the injection of minute particles into the blood vessels supplying the uterus, effectively cutting off blood flow to the fibroids, thus inducing their shrinkage.
Dr. Sambit Kumar Pattanayak, Associate Consultant in Vascular and Interventional Radiology at SUMUM, spearheaded the procedure, culminating in the patient's successful discharge from the hospital.
