IMD predicts temperature hike, thundershower activity

Bhubaneswar, May 27: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported on Monday that amidst ongoing thunderstorm activity, the day temperature in Odisha is anticipated to climb by 3-5 degrees Celsius over the next 3-4 days.

This increase is attributed by weather experts to the intensified flow of dry northerly-northwesterly winds toward the state following the landfall of Severe Cyclonic Storm Remal. Remal made landfall between Sagar Islands and Khepupara, near the southwest of Mongla, Bangladesh, with wind speeds ranging from 110 to 120 kmph, gusting up to 135 kmph overnight. While coastal areas like Balasore, Chandbali, Bhadrak, and Paradip experienced rainfall under its influence, interior regions observed a rise in temperatures.

The storm, drawing moisture from the atmosphere, is expected to potentially trigger thundershower activities across the state.

The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain/thundershowers in districts including Balasore, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Malkangiri, Koraput, and Rayagada on May 27. On May 28, Nuapada, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, and Bargarh are expected to experience similar weather, followed by North Coastal Odisha, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar over the subsequent three days. Light to moderate rain/thundershowers are likely at a few places in the state on June 1-2.

Additionally, the IMD mentioned that conditions are poised to become favorable for the onset of the Monsoon over Kerala within the next five days.
