IMD issues yellow warning as intense heatwave to scorch Odisha

Bhubaneswar, May 11: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Warning for Odisha, forecasting severe heatwave conditions across multiple districts over the next 24 hours. Daytime temperatures are expected to soar, with many areas likely to record maximum temperatures of 40°C or higher.
According to the IMD's latest mid-day weather bulletin, scorching heat is expected in parts of Bhubaneswar, Dhenkanal, Bargarh, Nuapada, Khordha, Rourkela, Sonepur, Nayagarh, Boudh, Paralakhemundi, Jajpur, Titlagarh, Balasore, Chandbali, Cuttack, Angul, Baripada, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Bhawanipatna, and Bolangir.
Coastal and adjoining districts—such as Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati—are also expected to face hot and humid conditions, worsening discomfort.
However, isolated districts including Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Nuapada, Koraput, and Malkangiri may experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers in the afternoon or evening, offering brief respite.
The IMD has urged people to take necessary precautions against heat-related health risks. Citizens are advised to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, drink plenty of fluids, and provide extra care to vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses.
