12-year-old girl dies after accidentally eating poisoned rice in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Jan 23: In a heartbreaking incident, a 12-year-old girl lost her life after mistakenly consuming rice laced with rat poison at a village in Odisha's Sundargarh district. The tragedy occurred in Riung village under the Biramitrapur police station limits. The deceased, identified as Kiran, was the daughter of Sagar Kumbhar and a Class-V student at a local school.
According to sources, Kiran returned home from school on Tuesday afternoon and unknowingly ate rice that had been mixed with rat poison and stored in the house. Shortly after consuming the contaminated food, her health deteriorated rapidly. Family members rushed her to the Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH), but doctors declared her dead upon arrival.
The police have registered a case of unnatural death and sent the body for a post-mortem examination. After completing formalities, the girl's body was handed over to her family.
Adding to the family's grief, locals revealed that Kiran's elder sister had died a few months earlier due to a snakebite while sleeping at home.
