Odisha plans anti-drone security system for Puri Jagannath temple amid terror threat concerns

Bhubaneswar, May 23: In the wake of rising terror threats and the recent deadly attack in Pahalgam, the Odisha government is considering the installation of an anti-drone system at the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri.
Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan announced on Friday that the Odisha Police may be directed to deploy such advanced technology to ensure the security of the 12th-century shrine. The system will be capable of detecting, tracking, and neutralising unauthorised or potentially hostile drones. Funding for the installation will be arranged through the temple administration.
The move comes as a precautionary measure ahead of the annual Rath Yatra on June 27, which is expected to draw nearly five lakh devotees and tourists to the holy town of Puri. Following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives, Odisha Police have intensified security planning.
Director of Intelligence RP Koche has issued a high-alert advisory to all SPs, DCPs, and railway SPs in major cities. The directive includes enhanced coastal patrolling, close coordination with the Indian Coast Guard and Navy, and surveillance of lodgings and rental properties. Intelligence agencies have been instructed to maintain round-the-clock vigilance during the festival period.
