Rain, thunderstorm activity likely to persist in Odisha till June 26: IMD

Bhubaneswar, June 20: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday issued an extended weather advisory predicting the continuation of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall across Odisha until June 26. Several districts are expected to experience intense weather conditions, including gusty winds, lightning, and heavy downpours.

For June 20, the IMD forecast indicates heavy rainfall in Sundargarh, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning with surface winds reaching 30-40 kmph in parts of Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati districts.

Although the low-pressure system over south Bihar and adjoining areas is expected to move northwest and gradually weaken over the next 24 hours, localised thunderstorms and gusty winds are still likely in several districts over the coming days.

From June 21 to 23, parts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, and Bargarh are likely to witness thunderstorms with gusty winds.

Heavy rainfall may resume from June 24, affecting Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, and Bhadrak. On June 25, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj are expected to receive heavy rain, with showers extending to Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Ganjam, Gajapati, and Kandhamal by June 26.
