Odisha MLAs push for higher salaries and pensions

Bhubaneswar, Dec 3: Members of the Odisha Assembly, representing various political parties, convened on Tuesday to advocate for an increase in their salaries and enhanced pensions for former MLAs, citing the rising costs of essential goods and healthcare. During the session, several legislators also called for improved health insurance coverage for journalists.
The assembly members stressed the importance of raising the MLA local area development fund from the current ₹3 crore to ₹5 crore, alongside proposing an increase in their monthly salaries to ₹2.5 lakh. They further suggested that the pensions of former members of the Assembly be adjusted to ₹70,000 per month.
BJD leader Pramila Malik emphasized the necessity of enhancing pensions for former MLAs, who are struggling with the current market prices and healthcare expenses. She recommended that, if needed, the Speaker should form a new committee to review and recommend salary and pension increases.
Deputy Chief of Opposition Pratap Keshari Deb echoed these sentiments, pointing out the inadequacy of the current MLA local area development fund. Congress MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati highlighted the numerous demands from constituents for developmental projects, stating that an increase in the MLA allowance was essential.
Speaker Surama Padhy acknowledged the consensus among MLAs regarding these demands, asking the Parliamentary Affairs Minister to bring this issue before the state government for consideration.
