Odisha Manaska discusses cultural identity crisis amid global migration

Bhubaneswar, Jan 14: The sixth edition of Odisha Manaska, a community discourse and engagement platform by All Things Odisha, was held yesterday evening at the Safe Odisha For Her head office in Saheed Nagar. The event, which attracted over 30 participants from various fields, centered on the theme, "Cultural Confidence or Identity Confusion: The Crisis of Odia Youth in a Migrant World."
The discussion explored the challenges faced by Odia youth in maintaining their cultural heritage amidst migration and globalization. Participants shared personal experiences and insights into the identity struggles of Odias from different walks of life.
The event was further enriched by the cast of the upcoming Odia film Angel, who unveiled the film's poster and discussed its cultural themes.
The conversation delved into the dilemmas faced by Odia youth, particularly regarding the erosion of cultural ties due to migration. The discussion addressed issues such as the lack of inclusivity in Odia culture, the absence of Odia history in school curriculums, and the shortage of contemporary Odia role models. The impact of migration on tribal youth and labor migrants, who are further distanced from their roots, was also a key topic.
Prominent voices, including actor Partha Sarathi Ray, filmmaker Sankhajeet Dey, and tribal model-activist Rhea Resham Bari, shared their own journeys of reclaiming their Odia identity. The group discussed the need for relatable Odia icons and the importance of integrating Odia culture into school curriculums.
The event concluded with a consensus on the importance of cultural inclusivity and pride, with participants advocating for a modern, evolving Odia identity that respects diversity while remaining rooted in heritage. Odisha Manaska once again provided a platform for open dialogue, fostering cultural reflection and understanding.
