Odisha CM urges police reform amid low conviction rates for crimes against women

Bhubaneswar, Sept 28: In a strong directive to the state police, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi emphasized the need for a change in approach during a conference with Collectors and Superintendents of Police (SPs) on Saturday. He requested a report from the Director General of Police (DGP) detailing district-wise crime statistics related to women, the status of pending convictions, and other pertinent information within a week.

The Chief Minister expressed alarm at the low conviction rate for crimes against women in the state over the last 22 years, highlighting that it stood at a disappointing 9.7% as of 2022. He stressed that the government supports the police force but will not tolerate corruption, irregularities, or abuse of power.

Majhi noted that the low conviction rate indicates potential flaws in police investigations or a lack of urgency from the department for expedited trials. He reaffirmed the state government's commitment to zero tolerance for crimes against women and children, asserting that stringent actions will be taken against influential individuals as well.

Additionally, he urged the DGP to submit the required data promptly, mentioning that a strategic plan would be developed following legal consultations. Majhi pointed out the rising instances of eve teasing in the state, calling on the police to ensure that women, students, and girls feel safe moving about freely. He reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi's focus on the safety of women and children, aligning Odisha's stance with this national commitment.
