SUM Ultimate Medicare performs life-saving plasma exchange on young patient

Bhubaneswar, Aug 6: A 9-year-old girl has successfully recovered from severe liver failure at SUM Ultimate Medicare (SUMUM) due to the expert application of Plasma Exchange therapy. The girl was admitted to the hospital with jaundice caused by a viral infection and was initially treated by Dr. Ayaskanta Singh, Senior Consultant and Head of Gastroenterology.

As her condition worsened, she was transferred to the NICU under Dr. Pradip Kumar Dey, Head of Pediatrics and Neonatology. Faced with respiratory distress and no immediate option for liver transplantation, the medical team decided to use Plasma Exchange, also known as liver dialysis. "This procedure is rarely performed on children," noted Dr. Gadadhar Panda, Associate Consultant in Gastroenterology, who led the treatment.

Dr. Dey highlighted that the mortality rate for such cases is nearly 90 percent. Dr. Sambit Bhuyan, Associate Consultant in Gastroenterology, explained the risks and benefits of the procedure to the parents before proceeding.

Dr. Singh described Plasma Exchange as an uncommon but potentially life-saving procedure. After undergoing four cycles of the treatment, combined with medical management, the patient regained consciousness and showed significant improvement in liver function. She was discharged in stable condition and able to eat normally, according to Dr. Panda.

The patient's father, Mohammed Nasim, expressed his gratitude, noting that while other hospitals had failed to provide the necessary treatment, SUMUM's precise diagnosis and effective therapy led to his daughter's recovery.
