Odisha enforces strict liquor regulations ahead of New Year celebrations

Bhubaneswar, Dec 27: In preparation for the New Year, the Odisha government has implemented stringent regulations on the liquor trade, including a ban on issuing temporary licenses for liquor sales statewide, announced Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan on Friday.

During a press conference in Bhubaneswar, Harichandan outlined the government's actions, stating that strict measures would be enforced against anyone serving alcohol illegally during the Zero Night celebrations. The Excise Department has been instructed to conduct regular inspections of hotels, bars, and other establishments to ensure compliance with these restrictions through the end of January 2025.

These directives came following a meeting with department officials, with enforcement against illegal liquor sales commencing immediately. Additionally, the government will rigorously uphold regulations regarding the hours and conditions of liquor sales during the New Year festivities. District collectors have been tasked with overseeing this initiative.

The minister had previously cautioned New Year celebrants to adhere to the government's liquor consumption rules, emphasizing that any unruly behavior stemming from alcohol consumption would not be tolerated.
