Three detained in Bhubaneswar builder’s murder case; land dispute suspected as motive

Bhubaneswar, April 12: In a significant development in the murder investigation of city-based builder Sasmit Kumar Biswal, the Airfield Police detained three individuals late Friday night in connection with the case.
The detained suspects have been identified as Gulu Mohanty (34), Manoj Behera alias Silu (31), and Sukant Behera (41), all residents of Pradhan Sahi under the jurisdiction of the Airfield Police Station.
The arrests were made following a formal complaint lodged by the victim’s younger brother, Debabrata Mohanty. Acting on the complaint, police registered a case under Sections 100(3)(1), 100(3)(2), and 16(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The case, numbered 105 and dated April 11, 2025, names seven individuals as accused, three of whom have now been taken into custody.
Addressing the media on Saturday, Bhubaneswar DCP Jagmohan Meena stated that preliminary investigations indicate a business dispute as the motive. Biswal, a 47-year-old resident of Bhimpur, was reportedly involved in a land plotting venture with the accused.
A post-mortem examination has been completed, and forensic teams have examined the crime scene. Police said efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects.
