Monsoon set to enter Odisha in 2-3 days, heavy rainfall and squally weather forecast

Bhubaneswar, May 27: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that the Southwest Monsoon is likely to advance into several parts of Odisha within the next two to three days, bringing much-needed rainfall along with it. The monsoon is expected to spread into parts of Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, and northeastern states during the same period.

According to the IMD’s midday bulletin on Tuesday, conditions remain favourable for further advancement of the monsoon, supported by the formation of a low-pressure area (LoPAR) over the northwest Bay of Bengal, off the Odisha coast. This system is expected to move slowly northward and become more pronounced over the next 48 hours.

Weather models such as NCEP GFS, IMD GFS, and ECMWF suggest that the system may even intensify into a depression around May 29. Under its influence, Odisha is likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall from May 27 to May 31.

Squally weather with gusty winds ranging from 30-40 kmph, gusting up to 50 kmph, is forecast along and off the Odisha coast. Fishermen have been strongly advised not to venture into the sea due to moderate to rough conditions.
