IMD warns of intense rainfall and thunderstorms across Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Aug 7: A cyclonic circulation previously located over Gangetic West Bengal and neighboring Bangladesh has shifted to now cover Gangetic West Bengal, along with parts of Jharkhand and North Odisha.

This system extends up to 5.8 km above sea level and is tilting southwestward. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts that this circulation will likely develop into a low-pressure area within the next 24 hours.

Due to this weather system, heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) and thunderstorms with lightning are expected in parts of Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Koraput, and Nabarangapur on August 8. Additionally, heavy rainfall (7 to 11 cm) and thunderstorms with lightning are predicted for Malkangiri, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Angul, Boudh, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Bolangir, and Sonepur on the same day.

For August 9, the IMD anticipates heavy rainfall (7 to 11 cm) in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sonepur, and Bolangir. On August 10, similar heavy rainfall is expected in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, and Deogarh. On August 11, heavy rainfall is again predicted for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj.
