IMD denies cyclone threat over Bay of Bengal, predicts light rainfall in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Sept 15: Amidst speculation of a cyclone brewing over the Bay of Bengal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has assured that there is no immediate threat of a cyclone or depression forming in the region.
IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra clarified that while a new low-pressure area is likely to develop around September 20, it is unlikely to intensify into a cyclone. The existing low-pressure system, which triggered widespread rainfall across Odisha in recent days, has now moved towards Telangana and Vidarbha, leading to a gradual decrease in rainfall intensity within the state.
The IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall in parts of coastal and interior Odisha on Monday and Tuesday, but ruled out the possibility of heavy rainfall in any district. Mohapatra also stated that the southwest monsoon is not expected to withdraw from Odisha at this stage, ensuring normal seasonal conditions will prevail.
Addressing concerns ahead of the festive season, the IMD chief reiterated that there is no likelihood of a cyclone or depression during the upcoming Puja celebrations. He urged people to rely only on official weather updates and not be misled by unverified rumours circulating on social media.
