Electricity rates in Odisha likely to increase, public hearings begin February 17

Bhubaneswar, Feb 13: Electricity tariffs in Odisha may increase from April as the Odisha Electricity Regulatory Commission (OERC) prepares to review tariff proposals submitted by power distribution companies and other energy suppliers.

According to sources, OERC is scheduled to conduct public hearings on the proposals from distribution companies, bulk supplier Grid Corporation of Odisha (Gridco), and power generators like Odisha Hydro Power Corporation (OHPC) and Odisha Power Transmission Corporation Limited (OPTCL). The hearings will take place from February 17 to February 27.

If the regulatory body approves the proposed tariff revisions, electricity charges for consumers in the state could see an upward revision starting April.

Notably, electricity tariffs in Odisha have remained unchanged for the past three years. While rates were stable for two consecutive years, last year saw a slight reduction of 10 paise per unit in retail supply charges for domestic consumers across all slabs.

Currently, domestic power consumers pay ₹2.90 per unit for up to 50 units, ₹4.70 for 51 to 200 units, ₹5.70 for 200 to 400 units, and ₹6.10 for usage beyond 400 units. Several power companies have reportedly proposed tariff hikes, though final approval rests with OERC.
