ECoR launches special drive to prevent transportation of firecrackers on trains this Diwali

Bhubaneswar, Oct 18: With the Diwali festival fast approaching, the East Coast Railway (ECoR) has ramped up its efforts to safeguard passengers by launching a special initiative against the illegal transportation of firecrackers and other flammable materials on trains. ECoR has emphasized that carrying hazardous goods such as firecrackers, gas cylinders, acids, petrol, kerosene, and similar items in passenger trains is a punishable offense under the Railways Act of 1989, which can lead to imprisonment of up to three years.
In light of the festive season, ECoR has urged passengers to be cautious and avoid bringing any flammable or explosive items on board. Co-passengers are also encouraged to stay vigilant and report any violations by notifying on-board staff, including Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel, Government Railway Police (GRP), Ticket-Checking Inspectors (TTEs), coach attendants, or station managers.
To ensure adherence to these safety measures, all three divisions of the East Coast Railway—Khurda Road, Sambalpur, and Waltair—have been instructed to carry out a Special Safety Drive. This will involve rigorous inspections and ongoing surveillance to prevent the transport of firecrackers or other dangerous goods in passenger and mail/express trains during Diwali.
Passengers are encouraged to report any sightings of individuals carrying flammable objects by calling the Railway Help Line at 139. ECoR’s security teams will conduct random surprise checks in collaboration with RPF, GRP, and Civil Defence volunteers to ensure compliance.
In addition to these security initiatives, ECoR has launched a comprehensive awareness campaign featuring public announcements at railway stations to educate passengers about the risks associated with carrying firecrackers. Special teams will also monitor the safe handling of parcels and luggage loaded in parcel vans.
To further enhance safety, Train Escorting Teams and Meri Saheli Teams will closely monitor both passengers and luggage for any signs of flammable items. Moreover, sufficient fire extinguishers and firefighting equipment have been strategically placed at stations, goods sheds, guard vans, AC coaches, pantry cars, and locomotives.
East Coast Railway is dedicated to ensuring the safety of all passengers during this festive season and urges everyone to cooperate by following these safety guidelines. For more information or to report any incidents, please call the Railway Help Line at 139.
