Eastern India’s first brain mapping surgery successfully performed at IMS and SUM Hospital
Bhubaneswar, July 22: In a groundbreaking development for neurosurgical care in Eastern India, doctors at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital, Bhubaneswar, have successfully performed the region’s first brain tumor surgery using cortical and subcortical brain mapping techniques. This advanced method offers new hope for patients with tumors near vital brain areas responsible for speech and motor functions.
The complex surgery was conducted on a young adult with a tumor located near critical regions of the brain. Dr. Srikant Kumar Swain, Associate Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery, led the multidisciplinary team. He explained that brain mapping allowed for precise identification of essential functional areas during surgery, enabling safe and effective tumor removal without affecting speech or motor skills.
Supporting the procedure were Dr. Srimanta Pattnaik, Consultant Neurologist, and Dr. Debi Prasad Mohapatra, Consultant Neuro-Anesthesiologist, who played a key role in intraoperative neurological testing.
The patient has recovered well, retaining all major neurological functions and is now undergoing radiotherapy.
Eminent neurosurgeon Prof. (Dr.) Ashok Kumar Mahapatra, Padma Shri awardee and SOA’s Principal Advisor (Health Sciences), hailed the achievement as a proud moment for Odisha. Prof. (Dr.) Pusparaj Samantasinghar, Medical Superintendent, noted that this milestone marks Odisha’s emergence as a hub for advanced functional neurosurgery, reducing the need for patients to travel to metro cities.
The announcement was made during a press conference attended by leading faculty including Prof. (Dr.) Soubhagya Panigrahi and Dr. Srimanta Pattanaik.
