SUM Ultimate Medicare facilitates life-saving organ donation from six-year-old boy

Bhubaneswar, May 12: In a remarkable act of compassion and medical coordination, SUM Ultimate Medicare (SUMUM) in Bhubaneswar facilitated a life-saving organ donation on Monday, offering a new lease of life to two critically ill children awaiting kidney transplants. The kidneys were donated by the family of a six-year-old boy who was declared brain dead after a tragic accident in Baripada, where a heavy iron gate fell on him, causing a severe traumatic brain injury.

Initially treated at a hospital in Balasore, the child was transferred to SUMUM on May 7. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, his condition failed to improve. After conducting the Apnea test twice, doctors confirmed brain death. Following extensive counseling, the grieving parents made the courageous decision to donate his kidneys, ensuring his legacy would help others live.

The organs were promptly retrieved and sent to AIIMS Bhubaneswar and a private hospital through coordination with the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO).

This marks the fourth successful organ donation facilitated by SUMUM, with 13 organs already donated to hospitals across Odisha and beyond. Dr. Swetapadma Dash, CEO of SUMUM, reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to promoting organ donation. Prof. (Dr.) Manojranjan Nayak, Founder President of Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (SOA), lauded the initiative, emphasizing continued efforts to raise awareness and encourage this noble cause.
