Opposition ruckus in Odisha Assembly leads to multiple adjournments

Bhubaneswar, July 24: The third day of the Assembly session was marked by chaos as members of the opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Congress disrupted proceedings.

Speaker Surama Padhy adjourned the session until 4 pm after an all-party meeting failed to resolve the impasse.

Despite attempts to break the deadlock, the Odisha Assembly session remained stalled. The Speaker initially adjourned the House until noon and later extended the break until 4 pm.

The uproar began at the start of the question hour, with BJD members leaving the House in protest.

Congress members soon followed, entering the center of the House and raising slogans. This prompted Speaker Surama Padhi to adjourn the session initially until 11:30 am due to the unrest.

In an effort to resolve the deadlock, Speaker Surama Padhy called an all-party meeting. Attendees included opposition leader Prasanna Acharya, opposition Chief Whip Pramila Mallik, Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Deo, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mukesh Mahalinga, and BJP MLA Jayanarayan Mishra.

The opposition has been outspoken in its criticism of the Mohan Majhi government, accusing it of protecting the Governor’s son in an assault case involving a government official.
