Odisha to introduce double-decker electric buses for eco-friendly urban transport

Bhubaneswar, Dec 10: The Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT) has announced a tender for the introduction of double-decker electric buses to enhance tourism in three districts of Odisha.
According to the CRUT announcement, the agency is looking for a bus operator responsible for the supply, operation, and maintenance of these electric buses under a Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model, which will last for 10 years with an option for a two-year extension.
The Request for Proposal (RFP) seeks bids for the manufacture and delivery of five air-conditioned double-decker electric buses, along with the necessary chargers and comprehensive maintenance for the same duration. These buses are intended for use in tourism services within Odisha, specifically covering routes in Khordha, Cuttack, and Puri.
The initial operational agreement will start from the Commercial Operations Date (COD), and the chosen operator will need to provide licensed drivers and trained staff to ensure efficient service delivery, adhering to all relevant regulations.
Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra stated that the introduction of electric buses is part of an effort to reduce pollution. He noted that if the initial service is successful, the government plans to expand the fleet with additional double-decker electric buses, which will not only increase passenger capacity but also help alleviate traffic congestion in the region.
