Odisha’s SUMUM pioneers plasma exchange to treat liver failure in teenager

Bhubaneswar, Aug 20: Doctors at SUM Ultimate Medicare (SUMUM) successfully treated a 19-year-old girl from West Bengal with liver failure using Plasma Exchange. The patient, who initially presented with fever and jaundice, displayed altered sensorium upon admission, according to Dr. Gadadhar Panda, a Consultant in the Gastroenterology department.
Upon evaluation, it was determined that a viral infection had led to her acute liver failure. Dr. Banambar Ray, Head of Critical Care Medicine, noted that the mortality rate for such cases is approximately 90%, with liver transplantation being the primary treatment option. However, since transplantation was not feasible, the decision was made to proceed with Plasma Exchange, also referred to as Liver Dialysis, after discussing the procedure's risks and benefits with her family.
The patient underwent three cycles of Plasma Exchange in addition to medical management, resulting in improved consciousness and liver function. She was eventually discharged in stable condition, as reported by Dr. Panda.
Dr. Panda, who has pioneered the Plasma Exchange procedure at SUMUM and throughout Odisha, has provided a crucial alternative for patients who are not candidates for liver transplantation.
