Odisha to introduce pet crematoriums for dogs, cats, and other animals

Bhubaneswar, Sept 11: With the increasing number of pet owners in Odisha, Congress MLA Sofia Firdous raised an important issue in the Odisha Assembly on Wednesday.

In a query directed at the Fisheries and Animal Resources Department, Firdous asked whether the government could consider setting up dedicated pet crematoriums in major cities such as Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. She emphasized the need for these facilities to ensure the respectful and environmentally responsible disposal of deceased pets.

Firdous also inquired about the potential environmental and public health benefits of such crematoriums and their impact on reducing illegal burial practices, as well as promoting responsible pet ownership within the community.

In response, Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mohapatra acknowledged the proposal. He stated that while the establishment of pet crematoriums in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack has not yet been considered, the suggestion is commendable. Mohapatra assured that the government would evaluate the environmental and public health implications and consult with stakeholders and experts to explore the creation of these facilities.
