Odisha Sarpanch suspended over alleged misuse of government funds

Bhubaneswar, Oct 27: The Odisha government has suspended Rasmita Swain, the Sarpanch of Barahipur Gram Panchayat in Mahanga Block, Cuttack, effective immediately. The suspension follows allegations of misappropriating government funds amounting to Rs 2,07,248.

Swain is accused of using funds inappropriately for personal purchases, including two air conditioners for Rs 1,35,000, electrification expenses of Rs 20,248, dismantling work at Radhesyam School for Rs 48,000, and an additional Rs 4,000 for air conditioner transportation.

Reports suggest that Swain's actions breached provisions of the Odisha Gram Panchayat Act, 1964, with accusations of power abuse and activities contrary to the residents’ welfare.

The suspension was ordered under Section 115(2) of the Odisha Gram Panchayat Act, 1964, with disciplinary proceedings to follow under Section 115(1) of the same Act.
