Odisha intensifies efforts to combat dengue with statewide surveillance

Bhubaneswar, July 9: The Odisha government has launched an extensive surveillance program to combat the increasing incidence of dengue across the state.

Under this initiative, the Health Department has instructed District Collectors and Municipal Commissioners to identify regions that have recorded high dengue cases over the past five years. They will conduct thorough surveys and mapping to pinpoint dengue hotspots and implement preventive measures.

State Health Secretary Shalini Pandit has directed immediate action from all District Collectors and Municipal Commissioners to begin survey and mapping activities. The goal is to swiftly identify and contain the spread of the disease during the monsoon and subsequent periods, known for dengue and malaria outbreaks.

The Health Department has urged district administrations to maintain vigilance, ensure adequate volunteers, diagnostic kits, and medicine stocks, and prioritize timely testing and effective treatment. They have also emphasized quick referrals to advanced healthcare facilities when necessary.

Furthermore, district and block-level Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) have been mobilized and instructed to be prepared to manage critical situations.

In addition to these measures, hospitals have been instructed to establish dedicated dengue wards and prevent mosquito breeding. District Collectors have been mandated to observe a weekly 'Dry Day' to curb dengue transmission.

As of now, Odisha has reported over 200 dengue cases, with Khurda district being the most severely affected, accounting for more than 30 cases.
