Gold seizure at Biju Patnaik Airport: CT and GST officials seize 24 kg of gold
Bhubaneswar, Sept 13: Officials from the state Commercial Taxes (CT) and GST departments on Friday confiscated approximately 24 kg of gold ornaments from a passenger at Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Bhubaneswar.
The gold was seized because the passenger could not provide valid documentation for 4 kg of the total gold. The gold, transported in three packets via a logistics company, lacked the necessary tax invoices and other required documents, according to a GST official.
Reports indicate that the CT and GST departments had received a tip-off about a gold shipment arriving on an Indigo flight from Mumbai. The officials waited at the airport and intercepted the carrier as they exited with 20 kg of gold. During a preliminary investigation at the CT and GST office in Bal Vihar, it was determined that while the documentation for 20 kg of gold was in order, the carrier could not produce satisfactory papers for the remaining 4 kg.
In a related incident, on August 26, the authorities had previously seized around 50 kg of gold and 200 kg of silver ornaments from a container vehicle near the Bhubaneswar airport.
