Odisha govt considers cow dung cakes for cremation at Puri Swargadwara

Bhubaneswar, Oct 29: The Odisha government is considering the adoption of cow dung cakes as an alternative to firewood for cremations at Swargadwara in Puri, according to Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister Gokula Nanda Mallik.

On Tuesday, he stated, “We aim to encourage the use of cow dung-based biofuel for cremating bodies. This environmentally friendly initiative not only aligns with Hindu traditions but also has minimal impact on the environment compared to traditional wood, and it may help facilitate ‘moksha’ for the departed.”

Mallik noted that feedback will be gathered from those overseeing Swargadwara to develop a comprehensive plan for this initiative.

Additionally, he announced the formation of a committee led by the Deputy Chief Minister, which will include five ministers and five secretaries. This committee will explore further applications of cow dung and cow urine to promote cow welfare, expand cattle shelters, and boost dairy production. The Kamadhenu Scheme has already been launched to back these initiatives.

Other states like Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, and Bihar are already utilizing cow dung logs and pellets for cremation. Notably, Pune Municipal Corporation began using cow dung cakes at 26 crematoriums across the city in February of this year.
