Odisha CM orders judicial inquiry into alleged torture of Army officer
Bhubaneswar, Sept 23: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has ordered a judicial inquiry into the reported torture of an Army officer and the alleged sexual assault of his fiancée at a local police station. This decision reflects the state government's commitment to take stringent action against anyone found culpable, as affirmed by the Chief Minister.
The inquiry will be led by Justice Chittaranjan Das, with a report expected within 60 days. The state government has also requested the Orissa High Court to oversee the investigation conducted by the Crime Branch of Odisha Police. In a statement, Chief Minister Majhi emphasized the importance of the rule of law and reiterated the government's respect for the Indian Army, while also highlighting their dedication to the dignity, safety, and rights of women.
In response to the incident, five personnel from the Bharatpur police station have been suspended, and legal action has been initiated against them for their roles in the alleged abuses. Additionally, the youths accused of harassing the Army officer and his fiancée on September 15 have been arrested and presented in court.
Following the Chief Minister's directives, a meeting was held with the complainants, attended by the deputy chief ministers, the revenue minister, the law minister, and senior Army officers, including the woman's father.
