Odisha braces for heavy rainfall as low-pressure system develops

Bhubaneswar, June 28: A low-pressure area has developed over the Northwest Bay of Bengal near the northern coast of Odisha, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) announcement on Friday. The system is expected to move northwestward over the next two days, bringing heavy to very heavy rainfall across Odisha until June 30.

The IMD has issued a yellow warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall in specific areas on June 28, including Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Jajpur, Kendrapada, and Bhadrak. Additional districts like Khurda, Puri, Balasore, Jajpur, Cuttack, Balangir, Nuapada, Boudh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Gajapati, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and Koraput may also experience heavy rain. Thunderstorms with lightning are expected in certain places, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Nuapada, Balangir, Sonepur, and Boudh.

Bhubaneswar should anticipate overcast skies with heavy rainfall. On June 29, heavy to very heavy rain is forecasted in isolated areas of Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and Sundargarh districts, with heavy rain also expected in Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Deogarh, Angul, and Dhenkanal. The IMD has also warned of squally weather with gusty winds reaching 40 to 50 kmph over the northwest Bay of Bengal off the Odisha coast until June 30. Fishermen are advised to avoid venturing into the sea off the Odisha coast and northwest Bay of Bengal during this period.
