SRC alerts Odisha districts for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms

Bhubaneswar, Aug 4: The Odisha government issued an alert to district collectors on Sunday, urging them to prepare for potential emergencies due to heavy rainfall caused by a deep depression over the east-central Bay of Bengal.

In a letter, the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) advised the collectors in districts under a ‘Yellow’ warning to ensure their administrative teams are ready for any situation.

The alert follows the Indian Meteorological Department’s (IMD) mid-day bulletin, which forecasts significant rainfall from August 6 to August 9, 2024.

The IMD has issued a ‘Yellow’ warning for the districts of Keonjhar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Cuttack, Kendrapara, Dhenkanal, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Nayagarh, Khordha, Puri, and Jagatsinghpur, predicting heavy rainfall (7 to 11 cm) between 8:30 am on August 6 and 8:30 am on August 7.

Additionally, thunderstorms with lightning are expected in some areas, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Kandhamal, and Rayagada.

From 8:30 am on August 7 to 8:30 am on August 8, the IMD predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) in Cuttack, Boudh, Dhenkanal, Angul, Sambalpur, and Deogarh, and heavy rainfall (7 to 11 cm) in Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Jajpur, Khordha, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Bolangir, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, and Sonepur.
