IMS and SUM Hospital hosts first-ever pelvic floor rehabilitation workshop

Bhubaneswar, June 10: A groundbreaking two-day hands-on workshop focusing on Transvaginal and Transrectal pelvic floor rehabilitation, the first of its kind to be held in Odisha, successfully concluded on Sunday at the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS) and SUM Hospital.
The specialized workshop, organized by the hospital’s Department of Physiotherapy, attracted 77 women delegates from across the country. Dr. Dhara Shah, a renowned expert physiotherapist from Ahmedabad, served as the primary resource person, guiding participants through intricate rehabilitation techniques.
The workshop underscored the critical importance of pelvic floor muscles, which provide essential support to vital organs such as the urinary bladder, uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, ureters, rectum, anal canal, testes, and prostate gland, while also playing a key role in controlling bowel and bladder function.
Key areas of focus during the workshop included practical approaches to address common issues like urine and stool leakage, uterine prolapse, chronic constipation, and various sexual dysfunctions such as vaginismus and dyspareunia.
Looking ahead, sources from IMS and SUM Hospital revealed that the Department of Physiotherapy is planning to establish a pioneering clinic. This upcoming facility aims to offer innovative solutions for concerns such as sagging tummy, sagging breasts, and vaginal tightness, notably without the use of any external devices. This initiative marks a significant step forward in providing comprehensive pelvic health and rehabilitation services in the region.
